Crowd Pleasers
The Crowd Pleasers were a dynamic funk band hailing from Ohio, active during the mid-to-late 1970s. While never a mainstream act, they carved out a unique place in the Midwest’s deep funk underground with a sound that blended tight horn arrangements, raw rhythm sections, and high-energy, party-starting vocals. The title itself is a nod to the rhythmic innovation pioneered by James Brown—placing emphasis on the first beat of the measure to drive energy and groove. Despite being signed to a respected funk label and having all the right ingredients for wider success, the Crowd Pleasers never broke into the mainstream. Much of this had to do with limited promotion and the oversaturation of the funk market in the late 1970s. However, their recordings found a second life among collectors, DJs, and funk enthusiasts who sought out deep cuts and regional rarities. The band is remembered for its authenticity and its ability to deliver high-powered, feel-good funk with just the right amount of edge. In later years, tracks from Funkin’ On the One appeared on several rare groove and deep funk compilations, further solidifying the band’s cult status.
