Detroit Emeralds

C. J. & Company

C. J. & Company was a Detroit disco group best known for their 1977 hit “Devil’s Gun,” a chart-topping dance anthem that became the first track ever played at Studio 54. Combining soulful vocals, lush orchestration, and a powerful funk-disco groove, the group left a lasting mark on the era’s club scene with a sound that was both polished and passionate.

Funkadelic

Funkadelic was a groundbreaking funk rock band formed by George Clinton in 1968, known for fusing psychedelic rock, soul, and funk into a revolutionary sound. With classic albums like *Maggot Brain* and *One Nation Under a Groove*, they redefined the possibilities of Black music and left a massive legacy that continues through P-Funk and hip-hop. The Ohio Players were a groundbreaking funk band from Dayton, Ohio, known for their smooth yet gritty grooves, tight horn sections, and provocative album art. With hits like “Fire,” “Love Rollercoaster,” and “Funky Worm,” they dominated the '70s funk charts and heavily influenced the evolution of funk, R&B, and hip-hop.

Eramus Hall

Eramus Hall was a funk and soul group known for their sophisticated grooves, spiritual lyrics, and smooth fusion of jazz, funk, and R&B. Their 1980 album *Your Love Is My Desire* has become a cult favorite for its uplifting message and analog warmth, while their 1984 follow-up *Gohead* reflected a shift toward synth-driven '80s funk. Though under-recognized in their time, the group’s music continues to resonate with collectors and genre aficionados.

Dennis Coffey

Dennis Coffey, a Detroit-born guitarist and producer, is best known for fusing rock guitar effects with classic soul and funk as a member of Motown’s Funk Brothers. He played on landmark hits like “Cloud Nine” and “War,” and achieved solo success with the funk instrumental “Scorpio” in 1971. A frequent collaborator, producer, and film composer, Coffey’s influence spans soul, funk, and hip-hop, earning him recognition as a musical innovator and Detroit legend.

The 45 King

The 45 King was a legendary hip-hop producer and DJ known for his soulful, sample-based beats and iconic tracks like “The 900 Number,” Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life,” and Eminem’s “Stan.” A master of the breakbeat and an early mentor to Queen Latifah, he helped shape the sound of golden-era hip-hop and left behind a lasting legacy as one of the genre’s most influential beatmakers.

The Clark Sisters are a legendary gospel group from Detroit whose innovative harmonies and soulful sound helped transform gospel music. Known for hits like “You Brought the Sunshine,” they fused faith with funk, jazz, and soul, influencing generations of artists across genres while earning critical and commercial acclaim.
